Environmental Charter & review

In June 2007, the Société des Bains de Mer set up its first 5-year Environmental Charter, with strong commitments on the part of its Board of Directors and General Management that have since been made permanent. Chairman Jean-Luc Biamonti signed the Monte-Carlo SBM Group’s second Environmental Charter in December 2013 for the period 2013-2016.

Energy savings over the last 7 years

Over the last 7 years, we have achieved the following energy saving results:
- Water: over 1,167,000 m3 of water, equivalent to two years of consumption.
- Electricity: -34%, -28% and -7% in kWh of negative calories, calories and electricity, respectively, which significantly reduced real increases in energy costs. Gas: over 6 million kWh of total gas, equivalent to two years of consumption.
- Paper: 9,500,000 A4 sheets were reduced to 7,100,000 sheets/year, or 47 T/year to 35 T/year (-25%), despite increased activity.
By using recycled paper , we have saved 813 tonnes of wood, or the equivalent of 4,615 trees that were not cut down!
- Waste: we have also collected the equivalent of 301 tonnes of paper, 2,172 tonnes of glass, 4.3 tonnes of batteries and over 48 m3 of electronic waste (DEEE).

Launching the second Environmental Charter

Today, by launching its second Environmental Charter, the Société des Bains de Mer enters an important phase with the following foundation and roadmap:

- Gradual implementation of a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) policy, announced during the last Shareholders’ Meeting.
- The implementation of business-specific environmental charters in its main establishments: the Monte-Carlo Beach already has its own charter, to be followed by the Monte-Carlo Bay Hôtel & Resort, the Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo and the Casino very shortly.

The 9 points of the corporate charter:

1. Environmental management & certifications (CSR policy, establishment charters, Green Globe certification, BREEAM standard on new construction sites, ISO 14001 standard under consideration for Thermes Marins, Imprim’vert label for integrated printing facilities).

2. Stakeholder information, awareness and commitment (staff awareness of sustainable development actions, Be Green PR policy for clients, ethical charter for suppliers).
3. Energy consumption (energy efficiency, energy optimisation, renewable energy).
4. Water consumption (monitoring network meters, rational use, water-efficient equipment and techniques).
5. Air, atmosphere, transports (clean vehicles, carbon footprint, reducing CO² emissions).
6. Biodiversity (pesticide-free policy, bluefin tuna fishing ban, supporting local honey production).
7. Responsible procurement (eco-labelled, organic, local and fair trade products and wood with FSC or PEFC labels).
8. Collection and selective sorting of waste (recycling and reduction at the source of paper, glass, batteries, electric and electronic equipment, bulbs, packaging, oil and fat).
9. Sustainable renovation and construction (BREEAM certification for all construction sites for minimal environmental impact).

The Société des Bains de Mer’s first Environmental Charter launched in April 2007 was assessed for each year of existence.
